Suspect shot in police chase

Suspect led chase after carjacking in Hillside

By SEAN JENKINS

HILLSIDE | Illinois State Police closed part of the inbound Eisenhower
Expressway near 1st Avenue in Maywood, after suburban police officers
shot a suspect during a chase.

A carjacking suspect is in critical condition after being shot by Hillside
police officers on the Eisenhower Expressway, during a chase that went
on for more than 10 miles.  Hillside police were alerted to a carjacking
Friday at about 8:30 p.m., according to a Hillside police officer. The
carjacker and an accomplice followed the owner of a car wash to his
home in Hillside and stole his van at gunpoint.

Police chased the suspect several miles through the near western
suburbs, and were joined by Broadview police in their pursuit. Shots
were fired on the Ike near 1st Avenue in Maywood, which prompted
authorities to shut down all eastbound lanes until 12:05 a.m., Hall said.

Hillside Police Chief Joseph Lukaszek said the shooting started when
the suspect allegedly fired shots — during the pursuit — at the officers
giving chase but did not hurt any officers.  Officers returned fired and
shot the suspect multiple times, according to the Hillside officer.  But the
suspect kept going, and didn’t exit until Cicero Avenue on the city’s
West Side. The suspect crashed the van into a pole and attempted to
flee on foot, but was “immediately” apprehended, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody at Van Buren Street and Keeler
Avenue, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.  The
suspect was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in serious to critical condition,
the Tribune reported.
